BIOGRAPHY

Praised for her “pliant mezzo” (South Florida Classical Review), “pleasant tone” (Dallas Morning News), and “resonant, round sound” (Miami Arts Review), Charlotte Stewart is a versatile performer whose scope extends from the medieval to the contemporary. A former chorister at Washington National Cathedral, she has had the privilege of singing many events of national importance for state and foreign dignitaries including sitting and former presidents, congressional leaders, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama, and at services including the funerals of Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, Ash Carter, and Madeleine Albright, the memorial for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the 9/11 National Prayer Service.

Charlotte has performed with many of the DC areas leading ensembles, including the Wolf Trap Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Opera Lafayette, Washington Bach Consort, the National Symphony Orchestra, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Thirteen, the 21st Century Consort, Folger Consort, Chantry, and the DC Singer Collective, and appears on twelve recorded albums. 

 

Operatic credits include Carmen and La Traviata with Wolf Trap Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra, Lakmé, NabuccoLouisa Miller, La RondineManon Lescaut, and La Clemenza di Tito with Washington Concert Opera, Der Rosenkavalier at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, Lalla Roukh at the Kennedy Center and at Lincoln Center with Opera Lafayette, and The Ballad of Baby Doe at the Washington National Opera Institute. Other operatic credits include L’incoronazione di PoppeaAlbert HerringThe Magic FluteIdomeneoHänsel und GretelCendrillonLa CenerentolaDido and AeneasL'Enfant et les Sortileges, and Suor Angelica.

As as soloist, her concert repertoire includes BachSt. John Passion, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Bachs Christmas Oratorio, Handel's Messiah, Duruflés Requiem, Faurés Requiem, Mozarts Requiem, Vivaldi's Stabat Mater, Dvorak's Stabat Mater, DAstorgas Stabat Mater, Mendelssohns Elijah, Brittens Rejoice in the Lamb, Mozart’s Solemn Vespers, Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, Haydn's Creation, and numerous Bach cantatas.

Charlotte earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree from Southern Methodist University, her Master of Music in Vocal Performance degree from the University of Miami in Florida, and her Master of Science in Psychology from the University of Maine. Charlotte also maintains an active teaching studio and is amid her fourteenth year on the voice faculty at the National Cathedral School in Washington, DC. She is also an alto in the acclaimed 16-voice professional Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.
